2019 Q2 smartphone and tablet GPU market share: Arm retains lead, Apple gains share

The latest research report “2019 Q2 Smartphone and Tablet GPU Market Share: Apple Gains GPU Share” from Strategy Analytics’ mobile component technology service pointed out that global smartphone and tablet GPU shipments in Q2 2019 fell by 9% year-on-year.

The Strategy Analytics research report estimates that Arm, Qualcomm, Apple, Imagination Technologies and Intel accounted for the top five global smartphone and tablet GPU market shipments in Q2 2019. Arm leads the smartphone and tablet GPU market with a 43 percent share, followed by Qualcomm (36 percent) and Apple (12 percent).

Sravan Kundojjala, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics, said: “The mobile GPU market leader Arm has been weak in terms of GPU shipments under its Mali brand, due to its major licensees MediaTek and UNISOC in the smartphone market over the past two years. In addition, although Imagination Technologies lost Apple’s GPU business, it won the favor of MediaTek and UNISOC in key customer orders. Strategy Analytics expects smartphones based on Arm GPU IP in Q2 2019 And tablet GPU shipments fell 16% year-over-year. Strategy Analytics pointed out that Samsung, Arm’s other important GPU licensee, has partnered with AMD, and the partnership may further impact Arm’s GPU presence in the smartphone and tablet GPU markets in the future position in the market.”

Stuart Robinson, executive director of Strategy Analytics’ Mobile Component Technology Service, added: “Apple is a newcomer to mobile GPUs, replacing Imagination’s GPUs with its own and gaining significant market share. Strategy Analytics estimates that Apple’s own IP-based GPU smartphone and tablet GPU shipments grew 27% year-over-year in Q2 2019. Apple’s main chips equipped with its own GPUs include the A11 Bionic, A12 Bionic, A12X Bionic and A13 Bionic.”
