NXP simplifies smart device and secure edge-to-cloud development with Microsoft Azure RTOS

Eindhoven, The Netherlands – April 8, 2020 – NXP Semiconductors NV (Nasdaq: NXPI) today announced the deepening of its partnership with Microsoft to bring the industry-leading comprehensive real-time operating system ( RTOS) – Microsoft Azure RTOS – used in EdgeVerse products to combine into a wider range of processing solutions. Thanks to this collaboration, developers using NXP products will be able to use MCUXpresso software and tools to seamlessly access the capabilities of Azure RTOS, including full integration for file management, GUI, security, networking and wired/wireless connectivity Middleware and tools.

Currently, many of NXP’s low-power, secure MCUs, such as 32-bit LPC and i.MX RT crossover microcontrollers, support Azure RTOS. With this launch, NXP will further deepen its partnership with Microsoft by supporting Azure RTOS in its popular MCUXpresso software development kit (SDK), further expanding support across the broader MCU portfolio. This one-stop integrated solution will simplify every step of the development cycle, such as selecting the right processor, developing and deploying secure intelligent edge devices, building a secure local area network and connecting to the cloud.

NXP and Microsoft jointly envision that the collaboration will reduce production costs for developers and help them bring new industrial and IoT edge applications to market faster.

“NXP is a leading MCU provider and a pioneer in the cross-border MCU space,” said Sam George, corporate vice president of Microsoft Azure IoT. “We are very excited to further our partnership with NXP to enable customers to access Azure RTOS through NXP’s MCUXpresso SDK. Thanks to this collaboration, developers can seamlessly connect devices to the Azure cloud to rapidly build and deliver innovative intelligent edge solutions to customers.”

Joe Yu, vice president and general manager of microcontrollers at NXP, said: “The rapid adoption of edge processing has changed the MCU operating system landscape. Now, the industrial and IoT edge requires embedded software based on a small RTOS, and what Azure RTOS can provide. Comprehensive middleware stack. We are very excited to complement our MCUs for customers with Azure RTOS to unlock the limitless potential of the intelligent edge and secure connected world.”
