What does the first flying car look like?

According to US media reports, the world’s first “flying car” that can both drive on the road and fly in the air was unveiled on the same day at the Miami exhibition in Florida, USA. The “flying car” runs on gasoline, can drive up to 100 miles per hour on the road, fly at a top speed of 200 miles per hour, and can fly up to 12,500 feet. The price is $599,000.

According to reports, the “Pioneer Personal Air Landing Vehicle”, which was developed by the Dutch PAL-V Automotive Company, has entered the mass production stage and is expected to be officially launched on the market in 2021.

The flying car can seat two people, has 230hp and is equipped with a four-cylinder engine. The body is made of carbon fiber and titanium-aluminum alloy materials, and the whole vehicle weighs 1,500 pounds and requires a 540-foot take-off runway and a 100-foot landing strip. The car can transform from a three-wheeler to a gyroplane in 10 minutes, and can go from zero to 60 mph in 8 seconds.

The car’s fuel tank can fill up to 27 gallons of gasoline, enough to fly 248 miles to 310 miles, and the flight altitude can reach 11,500 feet. Road travel up to 750 miles.

Robert Dingemanse, CEO of PAL-V Automotive, said that after four years of hard work, the R&D team overcame technical and quality challenges to create a flying car that complies with existing safety standards and global driving norms. In addition, the driver of the PAL-V flying car must have both a car driver’s license and a pilot certificate.

In comparison, the flying cars currently being developed by competitors are still in the conceptual stage, Dingemans said.

According to reports, after the PAL-V flying car leaves the factory, it has to undergo at least 150 hours of flight tests and pass strict tests before it can obtain the qualification certificate issued by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

Dinglemans said the PAL-V is not a helicopter, but a rotorcraft. The propeller of a helicopter needs a power unit to drive it, while the propeller of a gyroplane is propelled by the air flow, so it is more like a parachute.
